Professionally I was an air quality scientist with CSIRO for 40 years, but I’ve had a passion for art (esp. photography & painting) since my teens. About 8y ago, over winter, I did a short pottery course at CPC with Yuki & got hooked. Getting back to Mount Martha, I found there was a community studio a few clicks away at Dromana Potters Group, so more classes for a while & now a regular potter & exhibitor. Initially, I saw my pottery (whether thrown or slab) as another medium for painting but over time I’m getting more experimental. For forms I like interesting shapes/vessels & for finishing I like pit-firing, raku & flowing glazes (Amaco).
Most recently I’m making masks from different cultures & eras. I hang these on retaining walls around our house as a sort of totem wall. I’m also a member of a local community art gallery & sell pottery/art through their ‘shop’ & occasional markets – even if I’ve sold pottery, I’ve usually tried to ‘capture’ it with some good photos, a nice cross-over. Generally, with my pottery practice, I react to what’s happening around me – I’ll see something & get an idea
