About the Cairns Potters Club
The Cairns Potters Club is a not for profit group run by volunteers all with a keen interest in pottery and ceramics.
The Cairns Potters Club welcome all new and returning members. Membership can be made by completion of the application form found below. The Club offers individual and family memberships as well as concession and associate memberships. The various membership types and the applicable annual fees are detailed on the membership application form which may be found at the link below.
As a member of the Cairns Potters Club you will have access to a range of resources and facilities. This includes the throwing wheels, slab roller, electric, raku and glass kilns, spray gun and compressor, glazes and library. Refer to the kiln firing page for the relevant fees and charges for firing.
The library has a good selection of reference books and magazines. Members may borrow and return books at the monthly meetings.
Members also have the benefit of interacting with other members, sharing knowledge and ideas and forming friendships with fellow potters. On Wednesday evenings 6.00pm to 9.00pm and Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9.00am to 12.00pm members are invited to practice their hand building, wheel throwing, decorating and glazing techniques and even share a firing on occasion. This is a great chance to get to know other potters and share their joy in pottery making.
Full members are entitled to a club key for a fee of $30 per annum which allows use of the club’s facilities at the member’s convenience with the exception of when classes or workshops are in progress.
The committee holds meetings on the first Monday of each month from 4 to 6pm at the clubhouse. These are open meetings which members are encouraged to attend to participate in the organisation and function of the club.
Copies of the Cairns Potters Club’s monthly newsletters may be found on the Club News tab.
The Club holds two annual fairs for Mother’s Day and Christmas. These events provide an opportunity for members to market their work and become involved in the arts and crafts community. The Cairns Potters Club also hold sales and exhibitions at various times, such as The Cairns Show.
The Cairns Potters Club is actively involved in community activities such as the former Bicentenary Mural in City Place and Muddy’s Playground. These activities provide further opportunities for members to work with other potters in a community setting.
The Club also organises a biennial national exhibition. Over the years, the ‘Melting Pot’ National Ceramics Exhibition has highlighted current developments, trends and directions in ceramics Australia-wide. The next exhibition will be held in December 2022.
