Catherine Louison has always been interested in arts and crafts, thoroughly enjoying the learning and making processes. She has been interested in pottery since 2014 when she found an inspiring pottery studio on the Island of Santorini whilst on a Mediterranean cruise. Returning to Australia she investigated classes and the purchasing of materials. It was a slow start as working full time left little opportunities to really engage in learning and practicing pottery.
Now semi-retired Catherine has more time to devote to
pottery. Through attending Tafe and the Cairns Potters Club she has been continuing to explore her fascination with clay, glazes and various techniques. For her it’s a wonderful never-ending learning and experimenting journey.
She has tried many clays, glaze, techniques
including Nerikome, and participated in Raku and pit firing.
Catherine has an eclectic collection of pieces, striving to learn new techniques and producing a
successful piece through continual practice and
determination.
Catherine says she knows she has a long way to go to
achieve the level she aspires to but enjoys every part of the journey. The mud, the water, the mess, the
disasters and the very satisfying successes are all part of the experience, with a great friendly supportive community sharing the journey. She has made many wonderful friends through her pottery
endeavors.
Catherine has more recently become involved with the Cairns Potters Club, taking on the Vice President’s
role this year.

“It feels like I have found my tribe, with all the very kind and welcoming passionate
dedicated potters in the club community. Working together to make learning, facilities and resources
available to all who are interested. The club has some very exceptional potters who share their expertise and knowledge. And many wonderful novices like me are so eager to share, learn and enjoy making their art
whilst having some fun. Through the workshops and applying the craft I am seeing the world through
different eyes. I just wish I had discovered pottery 50 years ago.”
