Christina George

CLAY – What a wonderful medium for expression. I was introduced to this seductive tactile material in 1974 at the Cairns Potters Club’s first premises in a shed behind a private house in Collins Ave, Edge Hill.

This was followed by completion of a structured 3 year Studio Ceramics Course which had just started up at Cairns TAFE and then a 2 year correspondence glaze course conducted by Ian Currie through the Australian Flying Art School. Knowledge gained from these courses plus many workshops over the years with a variety of master potters has assisted me in the exploration of this medium. Firings take place in my small fibre lined gas kiln, which I built in 1981.

I continue, although spasmodically, to enjoy the challenge of producing an eclectic body of work, and aspire to the ethic “the excellence of every art must consist in the complete accomplishment of its purpose”, which unfortunately rarely happens, encouraging further exploration.
